CAREGIVER’S GUIDE TO NUBEQA

Support for caregivers exploring NUBEQA

From a diagnosis of advanced prostate cancer through starting your loved one on NUBEQA, use this guide to help you and your loved one navigate this journey.

Im Tony Romo—

former professional quarterback.

My most important play was helping my dad, Ramiro, get prepared to take on prostate cancer. I saw firsthand how challenging—and rewarding—it can be helping to care for a loved one facing cancer. That’s why I worked together with other caregivers and with NUBEQA to create this guide to help coach you through this journey.

I hope this guide helps you make a game plan with your loved one and his health care team. Your voice is powerful in advocating for shared treatment goals, so let's get started.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR ROLE AS A CAREGIVER

Your role as caregiver is extremely important

Caregivers play a vital role in their loved one’s treatment journey. When your loved one has just been diagnosed, you may both feel overwhelmed. That’s why we are here to help support you as a team. From the moment of diagnosis through every decision ahead, your questions, presence, and preparation may bring both support and comfort to your loved one.

Researching, questioning, and listening

Providing emotional support every step of the way

Setting shared goals

An open and honest conversation with your loved one about what matters most to both of you will help you make informed decisions moving forward.

Find the right time and place for this conversation when the energy feels good for you both—maybe a morning coffee, an evening walk, or someplace special to talk. What matters is creating space to listen to each other and to truly connect.

“When supporting my dad, who faced prostate cancer, we had a heart-to-heart conversation as a family—this really helped us make the right game plan.”

Open up the conversation about what matters most.

It’s important for him to know he doesn’t have to face this alone. Ask him what is most important to him and what is most important to maintain during treatment. For example,

Ask: “What support do we need?”

Diagnosis can feel overwhelming, especially for the patient. Remaining positive can be very difficult. As a caregiver, make sure to find the opportunity to give him what he needs. What can you do?

    Dont forget yourself

Caregivers need support, too. Talking with someone you trust can offer emotional relief and help you recharge.

    Leave with a game plan.

Discuss what you need to do before the next doctor appointment. This may be:

    Assessing if NUBEQA
could be an option

Spend some time finding the right oncologist or urologist. You can also talk to friends who may have had similar experiences. That way, you will be prepared to share what’s most important to both of you and advocate for the best care to help you meet your shared goal.

    Finding caregiver support

It may be helpful to speak with others who are dealing with the same things you are. Don’t be afraid to lean on family members, friends, and local groups. Opening up to them can make a real difference. Finding support groups can also be helpful. Research has shown that you’re not alone in looking for help!

    75%

of caregivers said that they believe a support group would make caregiving easier, and more than half of them have looked for a caregiver group or considered joining one.

          AS A CAREGIVER,
          YOUR VOICE HAS POWER

The diagnosis may be hard to hear

Men might shut down and stop listening or become cancer-deaf when they hear their diagnosis, so it's important to remind them that they are not alone. As another set of ears and another voice in the room, you can help make sure you’re looking out for your loved one.

Your voice is important, so remember—speak up!

Remind your loved one to ask questions and to be candid about their experience.

“During the discussion with their doctors, it’s so important to actively participate, provide support, and advocate for their needs."

Here are 3 key things to do to prepare for the doctor discussion:

          Be an informed advocate

Knowledge is power as a caregiver.

“As a family, we took an active role in every decision. We asked his oncologist questions about different treatment options and, along with his doctor, ultimately decided that NUBEQA was the right choice for him.”

          Meet his full care-support team

          Care support icon

Share your goals, concerns, and questions.

They’re there to answer questions and support you and your loved one through the entire process.

There are other professionals (like a mental health counselor, office admins, etc.) who are there to support you and your loved one throughout your journey. Make sure to keep an organized list of who they are so you know who to go to for any specific questions.

Align on the plan with your loved one

How will you team up to speak up together? Ask your loved one, how can you best support them during the visit?

“I can't tell you how important it was to have my wife by my side to come to the appointments, help me express my concerns, and ask questions that I didn't even think of.”

—Dr. Tom Green, urologist and a NUBEQA patient

Image of Dr. Tom Green, a retired urologist and NUBEQA patient
          standing-men

Remember, you're a powerful force in your loved one's journey with prostate cancer.

When you're ready to ask about NUBEQA

You and your loved one are in this together. You're his best ally during treatment discussions with his doctor.

"Ryan's wife, Tiffany, knew his history and the importance of diagnosis, and she came with a phenomenal list of questions, allowing us to jump into high-level treatment discussion. Coming prepared with your loved one eases their anxiety and allows the oncologist to meet you at that high level.”

          —Dr. Klaassen, Prostate Cancer Oncologist

          Image of Dr. Klaassen

Here's how you can make these conversations more successful:

Ask and echo: Repeat things back

            • Let the doctor know you’re coming in with questions
              • Repeat back what you’ve heard to confirm you understood correctly
              • Don’t hesitate to ask more than once if you need clarity
            • If the doctor isn't responsive, remember that you don't have to settle
              • You can always look for another provider who helps you and your loved one feel more comfortable
              • Don't forget that it's okay to get a second opinion
            • Stay organized, keep records, and take notes
              • Be very present, and listen
              • It may be helpful to keep a notebook or binder to take to every appointment
              question-icon

What side effects should I look out for? What should I do when they happen?

You need to understand what your loved one may experience so you can make decisions together and support him through it. It's important to be aware of side effects that may happen that need to be shared with your loved one's doctor right away.

              question-icon

Is your loved one already on a prostate cancer treatment?

Make sure to communicate any side effects or topics you are concerned about.

Remember, you play a critical role in raising the flags:

              • Caregivers are 4x more likely to talk about side effects than their loved ones.

                Medical history discussions

                • Ask if NUBEQA fits with other medications he is taking
                • Share all his medical conditions and any preexisting conditions
                Exclamation mark inside a circle

TIP: Bring medications with you to the doctor visit, take photos of the labels, or ask your pharmacy to print a list for you.

                Getting Started on NUBEQA

Navigating insurance approvals and therapy delivery can take some time, and that's normal. Make sure you understand what to expect, follow up with his care team as needed, and remember—we're here to support you.

He May Be Eligible to Save on NUBEQA

Your loved one may be eligible to save on NUBEQA no matter their insurance coverage. Select his coverage type to see your options and what to expect.

How to navigate the prior authorization process

Before getting the medication, his doctor's office will begin the prior authorization process. This means his insurance plan needs to approve NUBEQA before considering paying for it.

The prior authorization process usually takes less than a day, but it sometimes may take a week or longer. If you haven't heard back within 1 week, give his doctor’s office a call or, if they have an online portal, send them a message to check on the status.

If the prior authorization is denied, make sure to ask the doctor’s staff to appeal the decision.

Once the prior authorization is approved, there are 2 options:

Option 2: Pay the co-pay per his insurance

The cost of his co-pay may vary depending on his insurance policy. The average out-of-pocket cost of NUBEQA for men with commercial insurance is $112/month.

*Patients who are enrolled in any type of government insurance or reimbursement programs are not eligible. As a condition precedent of the co-payment support provided under this program, eg, co-pay refunds, participating patients and pharmacies are obligated to inform insurance companies and third-party payers of any benefits they receive and the value of this program, and may not participate if this program is prohibited by or conflicts with their private insurance policy, as required by contract or otherwise.
